“Every single thing I do is for surfing”
Three rising stars of surfing – Ethan Ewing, Griffin Colapinto and Seth Moniz – travel to eight remote destinations including Indonesia, Peru, South Africa and Tahiti, searching for pristine waves and an escape from the pressures of competition. Trilogy: New Wave follows these three elite athletes as they balance demanding careers with lifelong friendship and a desire to rediscover the joy of surfing, free from contest scores. The documentary explores the personal histories, motivations and individual philosophies of Ewing (from Australia), Colapinto (from Southern California) and Moniz (from Hawaii), charting three unique character studies against the backdrop of high performance, high action surfing.
Made in the spirit of Taylor Steele’s Trilogy (2007), which offered a rare insight into the lives of three of the greatest surfers of all time – Andy Irons, Taj Burrow and Joel Parkinson – Trilogy: New Wave examines the evolution of surfing from countercultural pastime to mainstream sport, via the experiences of three central subjects. Colapinto is currently ranked number one on the World Surf League Championship Tour and if you were at the Rip Curl Pro back in early April, you would have seen him place runner-up in this year’s competition. Director Andrew Mackenzie makes great use of an FPV racing drone to capture footage that’s insanely close to the action and offers a spectacular new way to see surfing.
