Overview

High-school dropout Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) transforms overnight from nightclub dishwasher to ‘Dirk Diggler’ when he’s discovered by porn director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds). It’s the 1970s, the adult film business is booming, and Dirk soon becomes a huge star thanks to his hunky good looks, youthful charm and… other assets. Having run out on his estranged mother and stepfather, Dirk’s filmmaking colleagues become his new family. There’s Rollergirl (Heather Graham), Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), ‘Little’ Bill Thompson (William H. Macy) and his best pal and co-star Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly). But life can’t stay all pool parties and disco beats forever as the 1980s arrives and the industry begins to change forever.

Why You Should See This Film

Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Phantom Thread, The Master) second feature, Boogie Nights is arguably the film that turned the maverick director into a household name. It earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and well-deserved acting nominations for Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore. In fact, Reynolds’ performance collected him a total of 12 awards (including a Golden Globe), while Moore’s electrifying turn garnered her 6 wins. Wahlberg’s breakthrough performance also launched him into superstardom – he had been recommended for the role by Leonardo DiCaprio, who couldn’t accept it himself given that he’d just signed on for Titanic.
