It’s 1958 and lovestruck teens Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) are immersed in a bittersweet summer fling. When Sandy’s parents decided against returning to Australia, she ends up attending Danny’s high school where the greaser thug acts like a total prick to her! To fight back against former flame's leather jacket-sporting T-Birds, the goodie-two-shoes Sandy joins the corresponding female clique The Pink Ladies, setting off a chain of electrifying musical numbers and inevitable adolescent conundrum — from first jobs and sock hops to premarital sex and bad skin.
Based on the hit 1971 musical, Grease might have been the movie that made everyone start thinking the '50s were wholesome Happy Days-esque fun instead of repressively conservative, and that high school is a playful arena of good looking people dealing with low-level dramas instead of a hellish nightmare of insecurities and misanthropy. This film is nothing short of infectious fun, the songs are catchy, the performances are archetypal high school perfection, and John and Olivia are at their most irresistibly vibrant.
