Riley thought being eleven was tough in Inside Out (2015). Little does she know what teenagehood has in store for her… Inside Out 2 introduces a whole new group of adorable but meddlesome emotions just as Riley turns thirteen. Jittery orange livewire Anxiety (Maya Hawke, Do Revenge) brings stacks of emotional baggage, doe-eyed Envy (Ayo Edebiri, The Bear, Bottoms) wants what everyone else has, disinterested foreigner Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos, Passages) finds everything painfully dull, and big, awkward Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser, Richard Jewell) just wishes his hoodie would swallow him up. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust are forced to try and make room for these new emotions, all while navigating Riley through high school, new friends and the chaos of adolescence.
Winner of the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film in 2016, Inside Out is widely considered one of the best Pixar films ever, and one of the greatest films of the 2010s. This sequel expands on the genius concept of the first film, with even more anthropomorphised voices inside Riley’s head as she’s plunged into the emotional turbulence of puberty. Hawke and Edebiri are stand-outs, and there’s plenty of comedy gold mined out of the new concepts introduced in this film, including threads of belief, forming a sense of self, and the hilariously mocking sar-chasm.
