Overview

Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is a part-time music teacher in New York City who knows he has what it takes to be a professional jazz pianist, if only he could get that elusive big break. Fatefully, he learns that famous jazz musician Dorothea Williams has an opening in her quartet, and after a nerve-wracking audition, Joe lands the gig to play in her show that very night. In his excitement after leaving the club, he misses a pesky manhole in his path, falls directly down into it and slips into a coma. A disembodied soul in a purgatory-like place, Joe figures out that the only way he can return to his body in time for the jazz gig is if he helps a soul called 22 (Tina Fey) find her ‘spark’ so she can finally make her way from the ‘Great Before’ to life on Earth.

Why You Should See This Film

This is your first chance to catch this gorgeous, Academy Award-winning animation on the big screen since it missed out on a theatrical release during the covid pandemic. Along with Foxx and Fey, the remaining voice cast includes Graham Norton, Questlove, Angela Bassett, Rachel House and Richard Ayoade. The jazz compositions were written by Jon Batiste and the ambient music is care of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who were all awarded an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Grammy and BAFTA Film Award for the film’s superb score.

Soul screens with the Pixar animated short film Burrow.
