Overview

E.T., Back to the Future and Poltergeist proved Steven Spielberg had a knack for tapping into the idealism, daydreams, fantasy adventures and fears of our youth. No exception, The Goonies is a teenage adventure film on par with the director's very best adventures from his beloved 1980s TV series Amazing Stories. A group of dorky friends become enmeshed in an action packed drama with all the hallmarks of any childhood fantasy: treasure maps, pirate folklore, secret passages, underground caves, an evil mom, and a mysterious man chained to a wall. Shot on location in picturesque Oregon, this ever-quotable ‘80s classic is overflowing with harebrained schemes, rollicking fun and endlessly loyal friendships.

Why You Should See This Film

Aside from being a wildly enjoyable adventure flick that celebrates misfits and outcasts, The Goonies is now something of a fascinating time capsule, with cartoonish characterisations, a bespectacled Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman in a Members Only jacket, and Josh Brolin in his infamous red bandana — a look adopted by countless aspiring cool kids for the rest of the decade.
