Like many New York businessmen, Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) is staying behind at home to keep working through the summer while his wife and son head off to Maine to escape the stifling city heat. He turns his nose up at the ‘summer bachelor’ phenomenon in the city, where many guys use the opportunity of their newfound independence to engage in extramarital dalliances, and is determined not to be ‘that kind of guy’. That is, until he meets the gorgeous young blonde (Marilyn Monroe) subletting the upstairs apartment for the summer, and he starts to wonder if this ‘seven year itch’ theory that he’s been reading about in popular psychology texts has any merit to it…
This is your chance to see the film responsible for one of the most iconic pop culture images of all time – Monroe dressed in that pleated white halter dress standing over that subway grate. History-making scene aside, The Seven Year Itch is a sparkling comedy jewel of the mid-1950s. It was directed and co-written by Billy Wilder (Some Like it Hot, The Apartment), along with George Axelrod (his real name!) who penned the hit Broadway play that the film was based on and Saul Bass designed the title sequence. Monroe, naturally, steals the show.
